March 14: Day 2
The ocean is like a friend who has welcomed us home. The seas are flat and the wind is steady, Fearless is cruising easily at 7 knotts plus and we are giddy with the ease and joy of it. Out first day was one hundred and fifty miles. We cut through the water like a hot knife through butter and ambled lazzily at some of the fastest sailing I have ever experienced. If this is to be what the journey entails it will be a synch. I am gobbling down my fresh fruit and perishable items. I don’t want to waste and may have over bought a little. Oh well, a raw foods diet of fruits and guacamole is not the worst thing for me.
My hair has been falling out at an alarming rate and so I have taken the scissors to my scraggly locks and removed the damaged, color treated ends. now I am left with mostly my natural color: dark brown with some grey. I have not been able to blow dry my hair now for four months and the result is tight little curlie cues that hold their shape even after I sleep on them. Funny to note that my hair dryer was one of the luxuries I was most anxious to leave behind. I thought, “How will I style my hair without a dryer and not look like a total freek!!” In the end my hair is better without the modern interventions. We also shaved Brett’s head today. I tried to talk him out of it but it was something that he really wanted to do. We sat on the deck with scissors and a pair of clippers and watched the wind take away the scraps that once lived on my hubbies head. It looks terrible. He has a birthmark on the crown of his head and the contrast between the tan face and the pasty white skull is not flattering. He was dissapointed in the clamminess of his scalp and found sleeping on it uncomfortable. Serves him right. I can’t wait for it to grow back.
